Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and this is very handy when you don’t have internet access. The first time, there’s a small one-time step: open your phone’s messaging app, type the 10-digit Tag ID printed on the back of your NOL card, and send it to 511. This registers your mobile number with the card. After that, whenever you want to check your balance, just text BAL to 511 and you’ll get a reply showing your current balance.

Yes. RTA has an official app called NOL Pay, made exactly for this. You can link your physical NOL card to it, check your balance, top up, and if your phone supports NFC, simply tap your card against it to see your balance instantly. Linking your card to your Emirates ID also gives you extra protection — for example, it makes it much easier to recover your balance if your card is ever lost. On some Samsung and Huawei phones and watches, you can even set up a fully virtual NOL card, so you don’t need to carry a physical one at all.

If you don’t have internet access, you can also check your NOL balance via SMS. You can send an SMS to 511 with the format “BAL   <Last 8 digits of Tag ID. Or you can visit the nearby metro station.

No, Checking your balance on the RTA website, the app, at metro stations, or at machines is completely free. The only exception is the SMS method: your mobile operator may charge standard SMS rates, depending on your plan. That’s a cost from your telecom provider, not from RTA.

On the physical card itself, you’ll find “Valid From” and “Valid Through” printed on it, usually in MM/YYYY format. But checking online is more reliable since printed text can fade — the RTA website’s NOL balance section shows the expiry date right alongside your balance when you enter your Tag ID, and the NOL Pay app shows the same information. For reference, standard Silver and Gold cards are valid for 5 years from the date they were issued.

AED 7.50. That’s the minimum amount your card needs to hold before the gates will let you into the Dubai Metro or board a bus. If your balance is below that, the gate simply won’t open — even if your actual trip would have cost less. So it’s always worth doing a quick balance check before you leave home, especially during busy morning hours when the top-up machines get crowded. RTA Penalty Check

This is one of the most common worries, but your money is safe, it’s just sitting temporarily as “Pending Credit.” When you recharge online through the website, app, or Dubai Now, the amount doesn’t get written directly onto your card’s chip. To activate it, simply tap your card at any metro gate, bus validator, or solar top-up machine — that tap transfers the new balance onto the card instantly. This usually takes anywhere from 45 minutes up to 4 hours to become available. If it’s been longer than that and still hasn’t updated, call RTA’s free helpline at 800 9090.

You need at least AED 7.50 on your NOL Card to use Dubai Metro or buses.

Yes, for this, you’ll need a Blue NOL Card (also called a Personal card), which is linked to your Emirates ID. Students aged 5–23 and senior citizens aged 60 and above get 50% off standard fares on the Metro, buses, trams, and water buses. And it’s even better for People of Determination, they travel completely free on RTA public transport with this card. This discount only applies to a personalized Blue card, not to a regular anonymous Silver or Gold card.

First, call 800 9090 right away so RTA can block your card — cards are typically blocked within 48 hours of being reported, and RTA isn’t responsible for any misuse before that, so reporting quickly really matters. If your card was registered or a Blue card, your remaining balance can be transferred to a replacement card (there’s a AED 70 replacement fee). But if it was an anonymous card — a plain Silver or Gold card with no name attached — unfortunately its balance can’t be refunded or recovered. This is exactly why RTA recommends registering your card, especially if you use it regularly.

You can top up your NOL Card through several ways including the RTA website, RTA Dubai App, NOL Pay app or at metro stations, ticket machines and authorized retailers.

Dubai metro buses run from 5:00 AM to midnight (Monday to Friday) while from Friday to Sunday it runs from 8:00 AM to midnight.

The Gold NOL Card costs around AED 25 and it has AED 19 card balance. You can access the Gold class cabin using Gold Card.
